GACC NOMINATING COMMITTEE

TASK: TO PRESENT A SLATE OF CANDIDATES

FOR 2026 GACC OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS

AT THE OCTOBER 1st GACC MEETING

AND A FINAL SLATE AT THE NOVEMBER 5th MEETING FOR A VOTE

The GACC Nominating Committee works to find volunteers willing to serve as Avenues Council Board Members and Officers for each annual elected period.  We are currently seeking nominees for the 2026 calendar year.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to serve on the Board of the GACC? It’s so much more than just planning our monthly community meetings–although we do that too.

Serving on the GACC Board is a volunteer position where you can help plan the GACC’s efforts to improve the quality of life for all Avenues residents. This happens by you attending board meetings or perhaps by serving as a committee chair on efforts we make as a council that align with your interests – such as the Service Committee or Civic Engagement Committee.

Also it happens as our board members and committees help plan and organize events to educate and bring the community together, such as our Memory Grove Cleanup or our annual Avenues Street Fair, our Emergency Preparedness events, our Community Garden, and our Avenues Community Improvements Grants program.

In addition to board member positions, the 2026 GACC Officer positions that are up for election include:

Chair-Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary.

See more about the GACC Board of Directors HERE.

At our October 1 Community Meeting, the tentative slate of candidates for officers and board members for 2026 will be announced.

Any additional interested individuals may also nominate themselves or others at that time if they are present at the meeting.

Elections on the final slate of candidates will occur at our November 5 Community Meeting.

Email Nominating Committee Chair Joseph “Jurphy” Murphy, gaccpastchair@slc-avenues.org, with any questions, or to submit yourself or someone else as a nominee.

POPPERTON Community Garden

Popperton Plots Mission Statement: To grow healthy food and cultivate relationships through sharing local resources and knowledge within a diverse community while collaboratively caring for our community garden space.

community garden

With the assistance of countless volunteers and organizations including VODA Landscape + Planning and Salt Lake City’s SLCgreen initiative, and funds from Wasatch Community Gardens, the Greater Avenues Community Council and Slow Food Utah, Popperton Plots opened to eager gardeners in the Spring of 2014.

History

The GACC began work in 2007 to form a community garden. Several potential locations were considered, including the open space to the west of Kay Rees Park, and a section of Lindsey Gardens at 10th Avenue and M Street. In 2013, the City announced the availability of city park space for community garden use at Popperton Park. The Avenues Community Garden Committee collaborated with Wasatch Community Gardens, receiving grants and garden leadership training, which was completed by James Woolf and Michael Hughes. The site was graded and laid out for plots in the Fall of 2013, and the first planting was in Spring 2014.

Details

The site is approximately 1/3 acre and has an unobstructed view of the entire Salt Lake valley. It is a showpiece community garden and the GACC is proud to support the continued development of this important community venture. Popperton Plots is an official garden of the Wasatch Community Gardens. Please visit our information page HERE. Our community garden is located at 1450 East Popperton Park Way, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114 (map & directions).

Recent Improvements

Since its founding, Popperton Plots has added a pergola, a ring of fruit trees, numerous grape vines, fig trees and raspberry bushes, community shared growing spaces, pollinator plant spaces, compost bins that generate soil used in the garden plots, and improved low-water use irrigation. A kestrel box was installed and was adopted by a local pair of kestrels who had babies in 2025! Many hummingbirds are seen at the feeders on site, as well as hawks.   Upgraded pollinator beds have been built and will be planted in 2026.
