The Greater Avenues Community Council is an all-volunteer community group, and there are countless ways for you to get involved! The work to make our community better is done by our volunteer Board of Directors, and by the volunteers on our various committees. 

Committees

The GACC Chair, with the approval of the Board, may establish or dissolve committees of two types:

1. Standing Committees – These address general or long-term issues and exist until specifically dissolved.

2. Ad-hoc Committees – Formed to address fixed or short-term issues and are automatically dissolved on their one- year anniversary unless specifically renewed by the Chair or Board.

Avenues CERT Committee hosts emergency preparedness events and trains committee members to respond in our neighborhood in case of an emergency.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) is in the process of wildfire mitigation activities in the Foothills Natural area above the Upper Avenues. These activities include updating the power transmission equipment and poles to minimize the risk of wildfire.

Flammable wooden power line poles which can more easily topple during windstorms are being replaced with fire resistant poles.

This work will continue through early 2025. The project will impact trails and other areas of the Foothills.

The project is in conjunction with U.S. Fire Administration, with the objective of mitigating wildfire risk along the wildland-urban interface areas in the foothills of Salt Lake City. See more about wildfire mitigation HERE

Salt Lake City Public Utilities and Public Lands are monitoring the project.

The project managers for the RMP wildfire mitigation project are: Brant Swander: brant.swander@pacificorp.com, and Brad Knoles: brad.knoles@pacificorp.com.

The Salt Lake City Public Lands Department is also providing regular updates HERE, including information about current trail closures. Trail users are encouraged to visit the Public Lands website for updated trail closure information.

The Greater Avenues Community Council Encourages all residents to be prepared for an emergency. Whether windstorm, earthquake, or other disaster, we need to be ready.

On April 22nd, 2023, the Greater Avenues Community Council and the Emigration and Ensign Stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held an Emergency Preparedness Fair at Ensign Elementary School. The theme of the event was “96-Hour Kits for All.” 96 Hour Kits are also called a Go Bag, or Bug-Out Bag. The Salt Lake City Office of Emergency Management suggests 96 Hour Kit of items for your 96 Hour Kit.
