Nov 18 Council Meeting allows public comment for important issues to the Avenues

Salt Lake City Council Meeting
Tuesday, Nov 18, 7:00 p.m.
at the City/County Building

Will allow Public Comment to be heard on these two important issues of relevance to the Avenues:

A. SLC Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)

Ordinance Update

The ordinance change will regulate building codes, allowed materials and will modify landscaping rules in the designated interface area to reduce wildfire risk. See more HERE.

B. The proposed RMF 35 to 45 Zoning Ordinance Change

The ordinance change will allow increased building heights and lot coverages in the Avenues historic district areas, which could change the character of the Avenues. See more HERE.

You can share your thoughts at any time on these topics with the Salt Lake City Council by attending the Nov 18 meeting, by emailing Council.Comments@slc.gov, by calling 801-535-7654, or submitting your comments online.

The Greater Avenues Community Council is an all-volunteer community group, and there are countless ways for you to get involved! The work to make our community better is done by our volunteer Board of Directors, and by the volunteers on our various committees. 

Committees

The GACC Chair, with the approval of the Board, may establish or dissolve committees of two types:

1. Standing Committees – These address general or long-term issues and exist until specifically dissolved.

2. Ad-hoc Committees – Formed to address fixed or short-term issues and are automatically dissolved on their one- year anniversary unless specifically renewed by the Chair or Board.

• Many students in the Salt Lake City School District have unpaid lunch balances. Even small debts can place a significant burden on families, creating unnecessary stress and hardship.
  Our district is committed to feeding every child, regardless of their ability to pay. While this ensures no child goes hungry, it also places a substantial financial strain on our schools. We are relying on the strength of our community to step in.

• 3. The monthly Avenues Community Kindness Award
• Community Kindness Program – Winner for August! by Jenn Beck
• Damon Grayson was nominated by his neighbors on 4th and J who wish to remain anonymous, for “his kindness
  and being a helpful member of the Avenues community. His grandmother lives in the neighborhood and Damon is a walker. He often walks by my home on 4th Avenue at least once a day. Damon is a friendly, outgoing person. When I am in the yard or sitting on my porch, he always says hello and often asks if I need anything. I’m in my 70’s and have taken him up on the offer numerous times over the years, from helping with garbage bins to lifting things for me to shoveling snow in an emergency. Thanks to Damon for being a kind human being and a good Avenues neighbor.” Damon will receive a $25 gift card to an Avenues business of his choice! 
  This award happens every month! Avenues residents can nominate others in the community. Each month The GACC Service Committee will recognize the randomly chosen winner to receive a $25 gift card from an Avenues business of their choice!

For the Rio Grande Plan

A LETTER OF SUPPORT
FOR THE RIO GRANDE PLAN
FROM THE GREATER AVENUES COMMUNITY COUNCIL

January 8, 2025
To Whom It May Concern:

The Greater Avenues Community Council supports the Rio Grande Plan, a citizen-led proposal which seeks to eliminate eight at-grade rail crossings near downtown Salt Lake City by putting the rails in an underground structure called a train box.

We believe this initiative would benefit Salt Lake City in a number of important ways:

• It would make the city easier to navigate and improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and others by burying the rail lines and reducing the east-west divide.
• It would improve air quality by decreasing lines of idling vehicles at railroad crossings and by increasing public transit ridership by offering a better overall experience.
• It would reduce noise pollution since train whistles and such would be below ground.
• It would reimagine 125 acres of underutilized downtown land that could be used in a
  variety of ways to benefit city residents.
  • It would preserve the historic, 114-year-old Rio Grande Depot and restore it to its
  original glory.
• It would create an iconic transit hub for the entire region, accommodating Union Pacific, UTA FrontRunner, Amtrak, TRAX, and buses.
• It would once again establish a cherished landmark, welcoming visitors and residents to our city in a way that would make us proud.

The potential impact to our city, state, and region is tremendous, and we strongly encourage all leaders and citizens to take action.

With so many new developments and significant events on the horizon, now is the time to seriously consider the future of transportation in our city and to secure the necessary funding to move such a solid, well-researched, transformative plan forward.

Avenues CERT Committee hosts emergency preparedness events and trains committee members to respond in our neighborhood in case of an emergency.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Classes will run for 7 weeks from 6-9pm and will be located at Salt Lake City Fire Training Division (1600 S. Industrial Road, Salt Lake City, UT 84104).
