GACC NOMINATING COMMITTEE

TASK: TO PRESENT A SLATE OF CANDIDATES

FOR 2026 GACC OFFICERS AND BOARD MEMBERS

AT THE OCTOBER 1st GACC MEETING

AND A FINAL SLATE AT THE NOVEMBER 5th MEETING FOR A VOTE

The GACC Nominating Committee works to find volunteers willing to serve as Avenues Council Board Members and Officers for each annual elected period.  We are currently seeking nominees for the 2026 calendar year.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to serve on the Board of the GACC? It’s so much more than just planning our monthly community meetings–although we do that too.

Serving on the GACC Board is a volunteer position where you can help plan the GACC’s efforts to improve the quality of life for all Avenues residents. This happens by you attending board meetings or perhaps by serving as a committee chair on efforts we make as a council that align with your interests – such as the Service Committee or Civic Engagement Committee.

Also it happens as our board members and committees help plan and organize events to educate and bring the community together, such as our Memory Grove Cleanup or our annual Avenues Street Fair, our Emergency Preparedness events, our Community Garden, and our Avenues Community Improvements Grants program.

In addition to board member positions, the 2026 GACC Officer positions that are up for election include:

Chair-Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary.

See more about the GACC Board of Directors HERE.

At our October 1 Community Meeting, the tentative slate of candidates for officers and board members for 2026 will be announced.

Any additional interested individuals may also nominate themselves or others at that time if they are present at the meeting.

Elections on the final slate of candidates will occur at our November 5 Community Meeting.

Email Nominating Committee Chair Joseph “Jurphy” Murphy, gaccpastchair@slc-avenues.org, with any questions, or to submit yourself or someone else as a nominee.

The latest news and thoughts on living in the Avenues

The latest news and thoughts on living in the Avenues

We present this new blog to go with our new web page – from your Avenues Council webmaster and newsletter co-editor. You can expect more fact than opinions in this space, in fact, did you know the Avenues Council is intended to be primarily apolitical? Our Bylaws and mission objectives are to fairly present all sides of many issues and let our citizens decide what course of action we take.

For example at our September 4th community meeting we will have a meet and greet at 5:30 p.m. outside the library featuring the candidates for Utah Senate and Utah House that represent the Avenues districts. Salt Lake County Mayor, and the Republican and Democrat candidates for Salt Lake County Council At Large “C” races appeared at our August meeting.

How is introducing candidates at an Avenues meeting “apolitical” you may ask? The Avenues Council itself does not take a position on issues. We may hold discussions and call for a vote, and present the results of any votes taken. We may hold debates and conduct surveys and gather public opinions, as part of our mission to present issues of concern to Avenues stakeholders.

Your Avenues Council will continue presenting candidates to the community at our September, October and November meetings. We are organizing a larger Candidate Night to be held at the Memorial House in Memory Grove Park in October. Stay tuned here and at our Civic Engagement page for details.

Politics aside, we will also continue to bring the community together with service projects and celebration events like the Memory Grove Cleanup, the Avenues Street Fair, our wonderful Salt Lake Avenues Community Choir‘s holiday concerts!  We have established a new Service Committee to coordinate efforts in our Avenues neighborhood headed by Paul Walton (pwalton@dsdmail.net). Please let us know of any service opportunities for our community that you would like people to get involved in. Our goal in establishing the Service Committee is to streamline communication so people are aware of the service opportunities in our community.

This will include things we already do like the sock drive, movie nights for the homeless at the First United Methodist Church, cemetery Post-Memorial Day Cleanup and others.  Our first service project for August is donating backpacks to Bryant Middle School. There are many students there who need school supplies. In the past low-quality backpacks were donated that didn’t last through the year. Please consider buying some high-quality backpacks with a handful of pencils in the pouch to help these students! You can just drop them off at Bryant Middle School, 40 S 800 E. Thank you and visit avenuescouncil.org to see more service opportunities in the Avenues.

Below are links to some of our events and opportunities, and the latest information on things happening in and around the Avenues.  Our goal is always to bring our residents and businesses relevant information that helps improve the quality of life for all.

The GACC Communications Committee oversees the production of our monthly Avenues Newsletter, and manages our Web Page and Social Media presence.

Communications

We work to ensure that all our communication channels are working effectively to keep all Avenues residents and business owners informed and engaged.

NEWSLETTER – We produce a monthly newsletter – The Agenda – that is printed and mailed to every Avenues address each month. The Avenues Council has been sending a monthly newsletter for over 25 years, thanks to generous support from Zions Bank and from  Intermountain LDS Hospital and our newsletter advertisers. The main purpose of the newsletter is to inform the community of the topics that will be discussed at each month’s community meeting. In addition to the printed newsletter we have our online newsletter.

WEB PAGE – We are continually updating the information on www.avenuescouncil.org, avenuesstreetfair.org and avenueschoir.org to provide you with the latest information about what is happening in the Aveneues. Thank you XMission for donating web hosting services. Thank you Infobytes for managing our WordPress site.

SOCIAL MEDIA – see all the latest about the Avenues on Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. We strive to provide you with the latest information and the best experience possible. Stay connected with our latest updates!

VOLUNTEER – We need volunteers to help with our communications efforts. Do you like working with web pages, graphics or newsletters? Please email Communications Chair if you can help and you would like to join in any of our exciting communications efforts!

CONTENT SUGGESTIONS – Email GACC Chair at gaccchair@slc-avenues.org with any topics you would like addressed by the Council or by the GACC Board, during our monthly community or board meetings or in our newsletter.
